We live in a toxic world. We are exposed to toxins in our environment at a much higher level than ever before. The need to look and smell nice, colour and style our hair, have clean homes, weed-free gardens, and non-stick pans all come at a cost. Individual chemicals are classified as safe by the authorities but what about the accumulative effect of so many chemicals in our system? No one knows for sure. Is it really ok to just carry on absorbing all these chemicals? Women are more susceptible to toxins because our livers already have a big job detoxifying oestrogen without anything else thrown in there.
There are hundreds of chemicals that are known or suspected to interfere with our hormones many of which are fat soluble which means they are stored in our fat cells and can access the brain. This means they cause weight gain and neurological conditions. These endocrine disruptors affect our hormones in a number of ways:
Cortisol – toxins are a stressor on the body. These triggers cortisol release which knocks oestrogen, progesterone and other hormones out of sync and increases sugar cravings.
Insulin – toxins can damage the pancreas and disrupt the action of insulin resulting in fat storage inside the body and an increased risk of diabetes and blood sugar issue.
Thyroid – toxins impair thyroid function slowing down metabolism and causing weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, anxiety and digestive issues to name a few.
Oestrogen – toxins contain xenoestrogens (fake oestrogen) and act like oestrogen inside the body adding to the load and can cause infertility, endometriosis and miscarriage among others.
These toxins include: phthalates, petrochemicals, pesticides, perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), flame retardants, fluoride, and chlorine. There are so many more. They are everywhere. It’s certainly worth thinking about before using or purchasing items – that goes for everything! I’ll go into more detail about personal care products next week.
